No matter who you are, everyone at one time or another can feel anxious about something. Anxiety is a normal kind of emotion we all experience. For instance, one might feel nervous when they’re faced with a big problem at work. They also might get anxious before taking a test or making some big decision in life.
However, anxiety disorders are quite different. These are a group of mental issues. These issues can cause a lot of distress and they can cause people to not carry on with life as normal.
For those who suffer from anxiety disorders, the constant fear and worry can be overwhelming to them. Even to the point of being disabling. However, if they get treatment, many can learn to manage their feelings of anxiety and get back to life.
Kinds of Anxiety Disorders
There are several different anxiety disorders that therapists treat patients for. Anxiety disorder is just a term that’s used as an “umbrella term” which includes a variety of different kinds of conditions that people experience.
This is one of those anxiety disorders that cause people to feel the horrible terror that can strike at any time and no matter where they might be. During these panic attacks, one might feel sweaty, experience chest pains, and experience very strong or irregular heartbeats called palpitations. Some people even might feel like they are having a heart attack or feel like they’re choking.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety disorders like this one are often called a social phobia. This is when a person worries overwhelmingly and often suffers feelings of self-consciousness about daily social gatherings or situations. They will often fixate on other people judging them. They may also feel like they’re being ridiculed and often feel embarrassed.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
This is when a person feels the overly excessive tension and unrealistic worry for no reason at all.
Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders
Most anxiety disorders will share many of the same symptoms that include the following:
- Uneasiness, fear and/or panic
- Sleep issues
- Unable to stay still and calm
- Sweaty, numbness, tingling, or cold feet and/or hands
- Difficulty in breathing
- Palpitations of the heart
- Mouth being dry
- Upset stomach
Causes of Anxiety Disorders
Those in research still are not exactly sure what it is that brings on these anxiety disorders. Just like some other types of mental health issues, they tend to come from a combination of different things. This can include changes in the brain, genetics, and stress. Anxiety disorders can actually run in the family and may be linked to some sort of faulty circuitry in their brains which control their fear and some of their other emotions.
If after reading the list of symptoms for anxiety disorders, you have discovered you may have some of these same symptoms, you should talk to your doctor. Tell your doctor of your concerns so that you can be examined. They might run some tests on you to try and rule out any medical problems that could be causing these symptoms. If nothing medical shows up, they may then refer you to a psychologist in order to get a diagnosis.
